My #SciComm project is a parody/redrawing of a poster for John Carpenter’s 1982 film, The Thing. Instead of the titular ‘Thing’, however, it is now the ‘ESKAPE’, and I replaced the main figure with the silhouette of a ciliated, creepy-looking bacterium. I chose the topic of ESKAPE pathogens and the antibiotic resistance crisis because it’s a critical emerging issue in hospitals worldwide, and I believe people should be educated about the dangers of the ESKAPE pathogens. Knowledge about their existence and preventative measures that can be taken to avoid them can help dispel hysteria surrounding healthcare and better protect people from potential exposure to these microbes. I feel the film The Thing is particularly fitting of the AMR crisis and the ESKAPE pathogens as the entire plot of the film is about a group of Antarctic explorers succumbing to a mysterious, rapidly-evolving alien entity they’re helpless against.
